About Balenciaga

The couture house of Balenciaga was founded in Spain in 1918 by Cristobal Balenciaga. Eventually he moved his boutique to Paris due to the Spanish Civil War when he was 40 years old. Historically known for his fine couturier and eccentric “bubble skirts,” Balenciaga influenced designers like Coco Chanel and Christian Dior.

Among others Oscar de la Renta and Hubert de Givenchy worked under Señor Balenciaga. The House of Balenciaga was closed in 1968 and Cristobal Balenciaga died in 1972. After his death, the fashion house lay dormant until 1986 when it was acquired by the French luxury goods holding company Kering, which also owns Alexander McQueen, Gucci and Saint Laurent Paris.
